This iconic&nbsp;<strong>landmark<\/strong>&nbsp;is a symbol of fame and glamour. But&nbsp;<strong>believe it or not<\/strong>, the concept behind the Hollywood sign wasn\u2019t to represent the Los Angeles film industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>REAL ESTATE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The original sign was erected in 1923 to promote a new&nbsp;<strong>housing development<\/strong>&nbsp;in the Hollywood Hills. It said \u2018Hollywoodland\u2019 \u2013 the name of the housing development \u2013 in gigantic letters. The letters were&nbsp;<strong>fifty feet high and thirty feet wide<\/strong>, and had more than four thousand&nbsp;<strong>light bulbs<\/strong>&nbsp;that illuminated the sign at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>THE END OF H<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The developers wanted to&nbsp;<strong>remove<\/strong>&nbsp;the sign after eighteen months, but people loved it so much that they left it there. The letters soon began to deteriorate, and in the early 1940s, the sign\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>custodian<\/strong>, Albert Kothe,&nbsp;<strong>got drunk<\/strong>&nbsp;one night and drove his car into the letter H, destroying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>saved by the people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This could have been the beginning of the end of the sign. The city then bought the land it was on and planned to remove it. But because of public pressure to save it, they only removed the \u2018land\u2019 section, so it now read simply \u2018Hollywood\u2019, and restored the remaining letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>PLAYBOY CAMPAIGN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And then history repeated itself! The sign again deteriorated, and by the 1970s, the first O was damaged, so it looked like a U, and the last&nbsp; O had&nbsp;<strong>fallen over<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 so the sign now said \u2018Hullywo d\u2019! This time, it was celebrities who&nbsp;<strong>saved the day<\/strong>, in particular the founder of&nbsp;<strong><em>Playboy&nbsp;<\/em>magazine<\/strong>, Hugh Hefner, who organized a campaign to save it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>ONE LETTER EACH<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nine celebrities, including Hefner, rock star Alice Cooper and Italian movie producer Gianni Mazza, donated nearly $28,000 to replace one letter each. And in 1978, the city revealed the sign that we see today, which has white metal letters on a&nbsp;<strong>concrete foundation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>SIGN OF THE TIMES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the sign is protected by an advanced security system, but it\u2019s often been\u00a0<strong>vandalised<\/strong>\u00a0over the years.
